In 1999, Vigan was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Justification for inscription (Source: UNESCO Website) Criterion (ii): Vigan represents a unique fusion of Asian building design and construction with European colonial architecture and planning. Criterion (iv): Vigan is an exceptionally intact and well preserved example of a European trading town in East and South-East Asia.
Laid back and relaxing experience with the sight of Spanish-era mansions, Cobblestone Street and kalesa (horse drawn carriages are the hallmarks of historic Vigan.
Saved from the ravages of war because of the love story that transpired between two Japanese soldiers and their respective Ilocana spouses, the city is considered the finest surviving example of a Spanish colonial town in Asia.
